- Vampires stalk the streets of Mossy Hollow at night, trying to lure unsuspecting victims into secluded alleys to slake their thirst. Sometimes, they choose to let them live, but not all are so lucky. The police department trains its officers in alternative combat techniques and requires them to carry wooden stakes, but their efforts can only go so far, owing to the fact that the department is also busy enforcing other laws and keeping a wary eye on the fairies, whose last prank cost thousands of dollars in private and public damage. This is a threat that cannot be faced by the police alone -- the city is sorely in need of vampire hunters, and it will pay handsomely for each step taken to eliminate the escalating bloodsucker problem.
- As knowledge of humans' protection spells expands in the modern age, there is growing unrest among the nonhuman population who believe it is their right to equal protection under the law -- household protection from vampires, that is. Seeing themselves as a vulnerable demographic, the drakes, nymphs, and even volants and fey want to see better accommodations to keep them safe at night. There are varying perspectives on how this is to be accomplished, however, with some supporting government-funded group home-like arrangements with a live-in human, and others preferring the idea of creating an official market through which humans can rent out living space and extra rooms in their homes to nonhumans in need. So far, the city council has not conceded to any of these plans.
- There's a small fairy population in Mossy Hollow profiting off the illicit sale of fairy dust, marketing it to other beings as a hallucinogen, and outside their customer base, they're trying to keep these transactions away from the public eye and the attention of police. Fairy dust is not, currently, classified a "controlled substance", but it may well become so if its effects are ever widely publicized. Already, there some unfortunate humans who have become addicted.
- Volant spirits have never gotten along with the fey, feuding and looking down on each other for as long as humanity has been keeping track of the two, and the most recent development on that front is that a local coalition of avians has formed in town, calling themselves the Mossy Hollow Guardian Avian Defense Unit (MHGADU), with a mission statement that includes halting all future kidnappings, much to the amusement of the fairies.
- Although no incidence of the condition could be seen in Mossy Hollow thirty years ago, lately lycanthropy has been spreading through the town, and now lycans are asking for assistance and support in adjusting to their new lifestyle. They ask to be sheltered and secured someplace safe on the night of the full moon, so that they don't have to tear up their own furniture, face the dangers associated with abandoned and decrepit buildings, or run the risk of breaking out of their own self-imposed containment and bringing harm to themselves and others. There's widespread agreement that loose, uncontrolled lycans in wolf form could pose a threat to the city, but as for the experienced lycans who have gained control over their shifts, there is also a fear that these lycans, too, could pose a serious threat to the unafficted -- by wielding unchecked lethal power that's available at their beck and call. As such, there are unafflicted citizens who believe there should be a registry program and government supervision to ensure that lycanthropy be regulated as strictly as -- or more strictly than -- the ownership of firearms. These motions are still pending in the city council.
