Volant spirits are winged humanoid creatures with lifespans similar to those of humans. Contrary to stereotypes, volants do have free will, and both types are capable of the same range of morality as humanity.
The wings are of a volant are large, with a wingspan of at least double the individual's height, and sprout from flexible joints their back, just under the shoulder blades. As such, it's impossible for them to pass themselves off as human. The wings can be folded up against the spine when resting or can be extended for flight (or to show off).
More than just for show, however, these wings are fully functional and enable full capability for flight. The hitch is that, in order to be light enough, volants also have a much lighter bone structure than any other being, and consequently, their bones are more easily broken. Volant wings, too, are very delicate, and they cannot lie on or against their backs or put too much pressure on them without pain.
Aside from personal flight, volants are also gifted with telekinesis and can mentally move and manipulate objects up to half their own weight. The extent of their telekinetic reach varies by skill, but generally, it cannot extend beyond twenty feet.
Volants cannot swim at all, and if their wings get wet, they cannot fly with them until their wings have dried. They are also more susceptible to burns and easily driven off by fire. More than anything, volants hate going underground or entering cramped, narrow spaces that would render them unable to fly.
Despite their superficial similarity to pixies, volant spirits and the fey have nothing in common, and comparisons between the two only exasterbate existing tensions. Owing to something that happened long ago, many of the fey enjoy using "volvo" as the plural of volant -- and despite being notified that the volants don't take well to this, the fey have continued to do it anyway, specifically because the volants don't like it.
In addition, all volants have a complete immunity to vampirism that means they cannot be turned.
That's where the similarities between the two types end.
Avian volants have higher voices, slender figures, and white feathery wings. Known for their gracefulness and lovely singing ability, these spirits revel in generosity and are drawn to helping people -- which isn't necessarily a good thing, since they might help someone commit a murder, for example, or some other wicked deed; they are equally capable of good and evil behavior, no different from any other being. That said, they're also highly protective by nature and inclined to declare themselves guardians of others, especially lycans. Sometimes, a person guarded by an avian may not even be aware of them, but it's not uncommon for them to make themselves known. Nor is it unheard of for them to commit brutal acts of violence in the name of protecting their charge.
Their hair ranges from shades of blonde to shades of blue, and their eyes are solid white except for the pupil.
Mammalian volants, also known as "fuzzies" and "fiends", are nearly the complete opposite. They have deeper voices, broader and bustier figures, and black webbed wings, resembling those of bats. Often hairier than avians as well, mammalian volants possess an extremely high libido compared to other beings, leading to their association with rape and prostitution. Sexual ethics among them vary, though, and they are capable of as much kindness and generosity as avians -- they're just more likely to be found on a mattress. As a rule, they favor positions that don't put them on their backs, and they tend to take vampires as sex partners to avoid the risk of infection and pregnancy.
Their hair ranges from shades of black to shades of red, and their eyes are solid black.
Strengths:
flight
telekinesis
complete immunity to vampirism
Weaknesses:
fragile bones
susceptible to burns
cannot fly when wings are wet
