Drakes are a species of sentient beings who are the least mammalian compared to the rest. They are somewhat humanlike in appearance, but with a crest of feathers on their scalp and scaly patches that can be found on the chest, shoulders, upper arms, knees, feet, and other areas that can be covered in order to conceal an individual's drake identity. These scales are somewhat hard and iridescent, with a base color of primarily dark green, royal blue, slate gray, or crimson.
Like vampires, drakes have poor circulation, but unlike vampires, they are affected by this and can catch cold easily. Drakes are often drawn to warmth and heat, due to their inability to produce enough of their own, and must take great pains to moderate their body temperature.
To mitigate this, most drakes develop a mild firebreath ability upon going through puberty. Through the mouth or nose, they are able to blow and ignite a flammable gas, unique to their species, that will produce enough small embers to get a campfire going or warm their hands. It's also a handy way to light a cigarette, which accounts for their high incidence of smoking addiction.
Drakes are not known to have a natural scent that differs in any way from that of humans, except for the odor of smoke they may carry with them if they use their firebreath often.
Despite their weakness to cold temperatures, drakes have tough skin that is difficult to puncture, even where they aren't covered in scales. This provides a defensive bonus, but at the cost of low tactile sensitivity. This can be seen as a strength or a weakness depending on the situation -- they can be comfortable on and even sleep on top of piles of hard objects, but they also don't experience as much feeling from physical contact, and gestures of affection have to be pretty rough in order for drakes to get anything out of it. Generally, they're aware that other beings are more sensitive and will even be gentle if they're of the respectful sort, but they don't show appreciation for similar treatment.
Unfortunately, drakes are also especially susceptible to illness and have weak immune systems that make any vampire bite a death sentence. It is unusual to hear of a drake living past the age of 70.
Due to their toughness and firebreath, drakes are often regarded with mistrust and get associated with aggression and destruction, but drakes are widely varied in temperament, and not all of their characteristics are of the same bent: it's been proven that their tears have healing properties, making them a chief ingredient in any decent restoration potion. Unfortunately, these healing properties only extend to repairing wounds and mending bones, not curing illness.
Strengths:
tough skin
ability to produce sparks
healing tears
Weaknesses:
prone to chills and vulnerable to frostbite
vampire bites (lethal)
