Well they hardly thought of themselves as a predator. Occasionally taking a life now and then because it was too inconvenient not to, that didn't make you a predator, did it? And could the fairy really be worried, after all this time, that they might just go for his jugular at a moment's noticed? It sounded so melodramatic, Friday looked at him as though unsure whether he was just putting them on. But when he elaborated, the reasonableness of his reaction hit them like a brick, and they dropped their gaze with a cringing half-smile and nodded. "Oh. Yeah, that's... understandable."
They were still interested in this journey-to-the-land-of-a-softer-sun idea, though. The vampire didn't quite understand what had brought Kailen's attention back to jewelry.
"You can do that? I mean--" They took half the number of steps that he had, allowing him more distance after that little scare, and carefully eyed him, or what they were able to see of him -- they knew this was a far cry from his true form -- as they asked, "You can glamor things that aren't... yourself?" That just sounded unrealistic. Still, they didn't think he'd offer if he couldn't do it. They edged closer to him, cast a quick and shady glance around at their surroundings, and whispered, "Can you give me boobs?"
He listened to their shock -- and their request -- before shrugging. "I've heard stories of fey who could glamour rocks into gold coins. Usually the gold changes back once the fey's heat leaves them, but in theory -- and with a little practice -- I don't see why I couldn't."
Granted, he wasn't the best at glamours, but he figured he'd learn if it'd make them happy. It was probably a good skill to have anyway, seeing as he was a fairy and glamour were good tricks when dealing with creatures from this realm. Another thought came to him then. "And, usually, the children we leave behind for mortal children are glamoured until they find their way back home." Kailen didn't know how that worked either, but it made his goal seem a lot more reachable.
He looked back at the jewelry, but chanced a hesitant look or two at them, and he opened and closed his mouth a few times before finally speaking. "I am... unfamiliar with that type of jewelry? Are there any displayed here?"
It had been a long shot, but they hadn't expected a misunderstanding like that. Friday blushed and shook their head, looking away. They weren't even sure whether the man was kidding. "No, it's not-- They're not-- Nevermind." It wasn't worth it. Although glamoring a separate living person might prove more difficult, he had said the fey could glamour things besides themselves, so it wasn't hopeless, but Friday wasn't about to take the time to explain. They crossed their arms over their chest again and stared down the street, embarrassed.
"Just... let me know when you want to make the jump to fairyland, 'kay?"
Quickly he turned to look at them, shock on his face, and he was afraid of his opinion of them. "I never intended to leave, regardless of whether you were with me or not, without informing you that I was returning home." He held himself back from saying that he had even thought that he wouldn't leave until the vampire had expired, but he felt that too intimate a thought and feeling to voice. Kailen could live in some denial as long as he didn't voice their mortality and his immortality out loud.
He was also surprised that they no longer wanted what they'd request, and his shock turned into something a bit closer to confusion and concern. "Are... Are you sure? I can try -- don't let my ignorance sway your decision." He looked away, bit his bottom lip, and then looked back. There was a tad more certainty in his eyes then. "I've relied on you quite a bit since coming here and, as much as I dislike to admit, would likely be dead had you not found me. I would like to repay that kindness."
Friday shrugged off his concerns, saying, "Don't get all serious on me, man. I just mean let me know what the plans are. I don't know how the hell that kind of transportation magic works. Maybe you need to gather up a bunch of drake feathers and make a talisman out of them, I don't know." They shrugged again and looked at him. "Just didn't think it was a snap-of-your-fingers kind of deal." He was actually kind of cute when he got like that, but this didn't seem like an appropriate time to say as much.
His insistence on kindness, though, brought a reluctant smile to their face. The dude was a sweetheart. A fucking clueless, several-hundred-year-old sweetheart who was quite good at killing things but didn't know what boobs were. Friday cleared their throat. "I wasn't... asking about jewelry, Kailen." That was probably apparent by now. They unfolded their arms from their chest and looked at him sideways, circling their hands around each other in that way they did when they were having a hard time finding the words.
"Uh, how do I put this... You know how-- You know how not everyone has a... chest as flat as yours?" they asked, glancing at his shirt. They were having a hard time not resorting to vulgar gestures. "I mean-- Uh, maybe this is a better question to start with: can you... make... uh, parts of me appear different? Can you glamour my hands bigger or smaller, that sort of thing?"
It was almost amusing, that they were asking him not to be serious but were slowly becoming more and more serious themselves. He wasn't completely dumb -- he may not have known what "boobs" were, but when he really looked at them he quickly assessed the nervous habit for what it was -- and as much as he was going to take back when he said and offer something else they had apparently mustered enough bravery to try again.
It didn't give him that much more insight, but at least it seemed they were going somewhere with this?
After their first question Kailen was pretty sure he got it, but he let them continue on and decided that, in this case, he better make sure. Since, well, anything but making sure could make them upset and that was the last thing he wanted to do to a vampire. Especially his vampire. "Yes, I can do that, though I am usually only changing how my face looks. It might be more difficult for other body parts."
That was good news so far. They couldn't imagine that their request would be all that more complex than altering his facial structure, so Kailen's warning didn't dampen their hopes any. Friday rubbed their hands together and checked their watch, then held out one hand as if it would help to distance it from the rest of them. "Okay, well, we've got time before the night ends. Let's give it a test, shall we? Give me rainbow fingernails, give me a sixth finger, go on. Try something."
Although they were biding their excitement quietly, there was a tremor to their hands that betrayed how keen they were on seeing just how well this would work.
Kailen let out a little scoffing sound, inched forward, and took their hands in his own. It took him a few minutes, but their fingernails gradually turned a shade of really bright, really vivid pink. He tilted his head, tried again, and they turned out a purplish color. Again; this time yellow. He was frowning at this point, because Friday had specifically said rainbow and god damn it he was going to get rainbow. Blue this time. Red the next. And then back to that horrid pink color.
Then to a shade of soft green that made him flush slightly, and then he just removed the glamour completely and stared at their normal colored fingernails. He looked like he wanted to burn a hole in them.
So rainbows were a little harder than he thought. He tried to add a finger, but that was hardly better; first he got the right skin tone and... well, it wasn't a finger. The second time he actually got a finger, but it was roughly the shade of his unglamoured skin. The third time the finger was that damn pink again.
The pixie was making a really unattractive face at this point in time. He was also muttering something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like profanity, even if it wasn't in English. He removed the glamour again, and this time he dropped his hands to his sides again. "This is... more difficult than I imagined."
Friday was about to make fun of him for seeming so put out and begrudging about being talked into using his limitless mystical magic powers, but before they could compose the words, Kailen had taken their hands, taking their voice with it. The minutes passed in silence, Friday feeling more and more awkward about standing in the street with a man holding his hand as the seconds passed, especially considering they were presenting as male tonight. They hadn't expected touch to be a part of it.
The vampire looked at him and looked down at their hands and looked up again, unsure what was going on behind the curtain and beginning to doubt whether Kailen was trying to glamour their hands at all (maybe he just felt like grabbing his hands, maybe it was a fairy thing) when they noticed that a new color was appearing on their fingernails. "Oh, that's pretty," they remarked as the pink grew brighter. They'd always been a fan of neon. To them, it seemed that the knight was putting on a mini light show, and they were smiling as the colors changed, unaware he was going for rainbow.
So they were confused at the way Kailen reacted to the green nails, as if green were an embarrassment somehow. Friday frowned at him in confusion and, seeing the look on his face, almost made up their mind to withdraw their hands when, the next thing they knew, there was some thing attached just below their thumb. The vampire jumped when they saw it, startled and disturbed, and the next instant it was green, and they couldn't take their hands away from him fast enough.
Still, it was what they had asked him to do, even if it spooked them to see the illusion appear before their eyes. Friday was biting back a smile as they stepped back and clamped their hands under armpits. "Well, that's alright. I'm sure it takes practice like anything else." Uninterested in angering the fairy further, they weren't sure whether it was appropriate to make light of the subject (or laugh at his frustration) and so they shifted to a different one. "I mean, you should have seen me trying to find an artery for the first time."
He made a noise that vaguely sounded like an agreement or a confirmation, and he tried to dismiss how they had quickly hidden their hands. He supposed, to creatures that had never dealt with glamours, that suddenly not appearing as you usually do would be frightening. He wondered if he startled them whenever he dropped his glamour suddenly, even if they had been rather loud in their appreciation of his skin tone in the past. Maybe he should ask.
But later. Much later, when the feeling of his failure didn't sting quite as much.
Kailen thought to ask about what they said, about missing what he presumed was a preferred vampire eating spot, but instead he looked back to the jewelry that had sparked this discussion of glamours and "boobs". "Do they signify anything? Wealth? Ability?"
Magic tricks and illusions at a distance were one thing, but seeing your own body changed and disfigured before your eyes was an unsettling experience, yes. Friday didn't think that would have needed explanation.
They didn't immediately follow the sudden change of topic, either. Their arms and posture loosening a little, they blinked and stared at him for a moment. "Huh? Oh, the jewelry?" Certainly not arteries, although a case could be made for them too. They raised a shoulder toward their ear. "...Yeah, wealth, I guess. Here's this shiny set of rocks, it signifies hey, look at me, I can pay out the wazoo to hang sparkly things around my neck, aren't I the bees' knees?" they went on, embellishing the parody with jazz hands and a roll of their eyes. But they couldn't deny the appeal had an effect on them, too.
Ah, he had been thinking that was it. And while he didn't need their parody, he felt himself smile slightly at their more than likely inaccurate representation of the wealthy and hummed in acknowledgement. He didn't miss the irony; after all, only a little bit earlier they had wanted some of their own. Kailen tore himself from looking at the jewelry for what would hopefully be the last time (though he doubted it, since the second he caught the shine from the corner of his eye he was going to want to look again) and stepped closer to them, though he was wary from getting closer, more for their benefit than his own.
"So they are decoration," he stated, "though fairy do that as well." He took a minute, concentrating, working his glamour so he could unglamour only one ear. He managed, though it certainly wasn't that great an attempt, and his ear turned green and pointed and the bone earrings stood out. "These are the closest I will get to such decoration, for obvious reasons. They are..." He struggled a moment. "They are... achievements. Warriors -- especially knights -- take them from foes they are proud of having met in battle. Sometimes they are worn as I do. One of the other knights takes a scale from every winterwyrm he slays; he had a set of armor made from them."
He didn't know why he felt the need to share that information -- maybe he just enjoyed their face as he explained things that were so painfully ordinary -- but he did and he shrugged and fixed the glamour so that no one walking by would get a glimpse of his skin. That would probably be bad.
In between his explanations, the moment it took for Kailen to unglamour his ear left Friday in the dark, leaving them to wonder what he was so suddenly frowny for -- and they'd started to tilt their head, a question on the tip of their tongue, just as the fairy's ear turned green.
Once they understood what this was about, the vampire nodded in understanding with a soft "ah" and admired the earrings. This was certainly more, uh... brutal than the fairies they'd heard about as a child (though, admittedly, those earrings were fabulous and rad as hell). Coming from a city with very few nonhumans among its population, they'd lived a very sheltered life in terms of the supernatural -- much the way some people were still clueless about non-binary genders. Unfortunately, the comparison did not extend as far as granting everyone of their gender any magic powers with which to crush their enemies. In Friday's case, they'd have to take their vampiric strength and invulnerability as a consolation prize.
"It's probably a good thing I don't do that with all the things I kill," they mused to themselves.
And as much as they appreciated all the background information, the fairy had a way of making his explanations a little more mystifying than he meant them to be, sometimes. "Uh, Kailen? ...What's a winterwyrm?"
He was surprised that that was what they asked. Not what, exactly, he had in his ears, but what a winterwyrm was. He gave them a look, just to test whether they were serious or not, and when he determined his answer he had to think for a moment. "They're... er."
Kailen cleared his throat and tried again. "They're like dragons, I suppose. But thinner and longer -- why they're called wyrms -- and aren't nearly as smart. Usually they're named by where they can be found; winterwyrms stay in the snow regions." A pause. "I actually have a piece of one in my ear." Well that didn't sound strange at all.
So they were exactly what they sounded like. Go figure.
Friday was about to ask the fairy about how he'd managed to kill a snow dragon when they noticed that the sky was getting lighter, moving from pitch black to a soft gray. It didn't take them any time to figure out what that meant, cursing under their breath as they spun around and started walking at a brisk pace.
"Night's over, Kailen. We'd better head back." Or at least, the vampire had better head back. The fairy was free to prance about as he pleased. Damn the living and their sun-resistant hides.
Not much later, safe in their apartment with its blacked-out and covered windows, Friday was fortifying the defenses of their blanket fort over their bed. It was only then that they got around to asking him, inquiring, "Does your wyrm earring make a good bedtime story?"
